About Our Restaurant . . .
Since 1983 - Celebrating 30 Years of Excellence!
In 1982 there was precious little beyond an entrepreneur's vision for the beautiful site above the Thames River to suggest it would become an iconic London dining spot.
Evidenced by massive brick smokestacks, it had been the location of a power plant for London's streetcar system up to the early 1900s; then a tile and cement warehouse which gave way to Guildwood Lighting in the early 1960s.
An experienced business owner, informed and motivated by his well travelled father's appreciation for great meals at fine establishments, Brian Stewart knew he'd found the perfect location for his new venture the minute he pulled up to the 1 York Street address 30 years ago.
He'd looked at other sites, on Richmond Street and elsewhere, but here he saw well beyond the chandeliers, rows of lamps and lampshades and the warehouse.
Working within the existing footprint to comply with Upper Thames River Conservation Authority requirements, large-scale renovations were made to create a unique ambiance in which to enjoy fine food and good company.
Named after Brian's young son, John Michael James Stewart, Michael's On The Thames opened on March 17, 1983. Since then, the restaurant's reputation has flourished. It has won numerous award, most recently, the London Free Press' BEST FINE DINING RESTAURANT and BEST ROMANTIC RESTAURANT.
